North Korea is drumming up the utilization of solar, wind and other renewable energy sources, local media showed Monday, as the country faces a chronic shortage of fuel and electricity amid continuing international sanctions. This report, “North Korea’s Energy Sector,” is a compilation of articles published on 38 North in 2023 that surveyed North Korea’s energy production. In this installment of our series on North Korea’s energy sector, we move away from official and commercial uses of solar and seek to understand the growing use of solar power for personal energy consumption in a country where its people still suffer from an unreliable power supply nationwide. Jung Eun-i, a research fellow at the Institute for Unification Studies, assessed in a report titled, Pyongyang! Surviving with Rooftop Solar Power, published on Tuesday, that North Korea is strengthening its self-generation infrastructure, including solar power facilities, and advancing its energy.
