Introduction

Several battery chemistries are available or under investigation for grid-scale applications, including lithium-ion, lead-acid, redox flow, and molten salt (including sodium-based chemistries). Battery storage is a technology that enables power system operators and utilities to store energy for later use. We offer a cross section of the numerous challenges andopportunities associated with the integration of large-scale batterystorage of renewable energy for the electric grid. Lithium-ion batteries particularly offer the potential to 1) transform electricity grids, 2) accelerate the deployment of intermittent renewable solar and wind generation, 3) improve time-shifting of energy generation and demand, and 4) facilitate a transition from central to distributed energy.
