Cairo solar container building food

At the four pilot sites, a range of vegetable crops were cultivated in different systems during both the winter and summer months. The project built soilless systems, whereby crops grow on a bed of rice husks, sand, peat moss or perlite, which is laid on plastic sheeting on special wooden. Development of sustainable cities and communities can in itself address numerous other SDGs, including ending poverty, achieving zero. These reflections are based on a one-year of ethnographic fieldwork that I conducted between 2017-2018 on four urban rooftops in Cairo and Alexandria, the two largest cities in Egypt. On these rooftops, women rear chickens, goats, rabbits, turkeys, geese, and sheep to feed their families and gift. To compensate for these consumption patterns, building envelopes can become productive in terms of greening and energy production. Karmod, the leading company in container housing production in Egypt, started producing galvanized steel container housing living spaces, shops and restaurants in order to introduce the residents of the overcrowded capital Cairo to cheaper and more versatile properties. The challenge of securing food for a rapidly growing and urbanised population puts a strain on water resources, land use & agriculture.
