Introduction

The paper presents the evolution of policy on pumped storage plants (PSPs) and their performance in India. Pumped storage technique is thtime-tested, financially viable, highly effective. Along with this, it is important to consider the timely completio undertaken by the countries for development of PSP. India has set a target to achieve 50% cumulative installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030 and has pledged to reduce the emission intensity of its GDP by 45% by 2030, based on 2005 levels. In a groundbreaking achievement, THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has successfully commenced the Commercial Operation Date (COD) process for the first unit of India's first Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri Garhwal in Uttarakhand. Energy storage systems (ESS) play a crucial role in addressing these issues by storing excess renewable energy (RE) during periods of low demand and releasing it during peak hours.
